![]() “Milk” means natural liquid milk, regardless of the animal source or butterfat content. Sugar-sweetened beverage does not include any beverage whose principal ingredient by weight is milk. “Caloric” means a substance that adds calories to the diet of a person who consumes that substance. “Caloric sweetener” means any substance containing calories, suitable for human consumption, that humans perceive as sweet and includes, without limitation, sucrose, fructose, glucose, and other sugars and fruit juice concentrates. ![]() What’s in, What’s out: “Sugar-sweetened beverage” means any sweetened nonalcoholic beverage, carbonated or noncarbonated, sold for human consumption that has added caloric sweeteners and contains 75 calories or more per 12 fluid ounces. If the intention of this bill is to help customers make informed decisions, it would seem SB 1000 accomplishes just the opposite. ![]() Senate Bill 1000 would mandate warning labels on hundreds of sweetened beverages, while exempting high calorie milk-based products that contain sugar - like mochas, frappuccinos and chai tea drinks.
